1918/PAe56 EUROPE Facing being entirely overrun by an organized army of Nightmen, the city fathers of the Budapest City of Light detonate charges to destroy the skyhook, Aeroplex, and key industrial facilities to deny them to the Hunnish Army. The detonation of the insulators on the skyhook prompts an Aester strike to ground that results in an explosion utterly destroying the City of Light, killing all of its inhabitants as well as killing 90% of the attacking force. The explosion is heard as far away as Paris and the flash is seen as far away as Vienna. The resulting Aester storms and effects are witnessed across most of Eastern Europe in the form of lightning storms in the Aester. Physicists visiting the site in the aftermath are staggered by the sheer force evidenced in the remains of the explosion (A three thousand foot crater and a thicket of twisted girders five stories tall is all that remains where the city once stood). Secondary effects reported included such things as melted train tracks up to ten miles from the city, fires caused by static discharges at telegraph stations up to three hundred miles away. The destruction of the Budapest City of Light highlighted problems in the City of Light system. Months after the city was destroyed, the effects of the interruption of the Night Train, air and shipping routes are felt all through Europe.
